Strengthening the governance and management capacity of Aboriginal organisations in a sustainable way, and according to their self-determined needs, will result in improved outcomes for the communities in which they operate. This is our ‘theory of change’.
Right from the start we have used an evidence-based approach to the design and delivery of the program. In 2013, APONT took the recommendations of the Strong Aboriginal Governance Summit to establish the program. In 2014, we conducted a survey on the needs and aspirations of NT Aboriginal organisations to informed the way the program was designed.
We practice a long-term approach to measuring impact through monitoring, reflection and evaluation.
Our Program Logic
maps out the activities and outcomes we are working towards. A Monitoring and Evaluation Framework is used to measure progress towards these goals. Our progress and impact is documented through an annual Impact Report.
We undertake independant external evaluations to assess the extent to which we are meeting our goals. These evaluations provide valuable feedback on progress and our potential future direction.
In 2015, an evaluation conducted by Praxis Consultants concluded that “...the program has demonstrated the value of culturally and context specific governance and management support for Aboriginal organisations... the need for ongoing attention to this area and the value that can be achieved through a program such as this.”
In 2019, this was reiterated by KPMG, who completed an evaluation of the program and concluded that AGMP’s activities have largely strengthened the capacity of organisations it has supported.
