Strengthening the Aboriginal

community-controlled sector

AGMP is an advocate and key voice working to strengthen the Aboriginal community controlled sector.  We work in the following areas to improve policy, support research and share best-practice approaches in Aboriginal governance and self-determination.

  • Set-up and transitions to Aboriginal organisations

We can help new Aboriginal organisations getting set-up and with transitioning programs to Aboriginal providers.

We use the APO NT Partnership Principles - a best-practice guide for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal organisations working in partnership.  A checklist is available to support Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal organisations to understand each other better. It provides practical actions for accountability and respect to ensure Aboriginal people are in the driver’s seat of local partnership arrangements.

  • Advocacy and Policy

AGMP is part of the APONT alliance – a coalition of peak Aboriginal organisations and land councils advocating on issues affecting Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory. Our shared interest is a commitment to the principles of Aboriginal community-control and self-determination. Together we provide a voice for Aboriginal people in practical policy solutions to government.

Our work intersects with many key Indigenous Affairs policy initiatives including Closing the Gap, Federal and Territory level Aboriginal procurement policies and the Northern Territory Government Aboriginal Affairs Strategy and Local Decision Making framework.  The need for our work in the advocacy and policy context continues to grow.

  • Workshops and Forums

We share good governance stories at conferences and forums. We make presentations and share case studies on the challenges and ingredients for success that we observe amongst Aboriginal organisations. We also organise forums and workshop to share ideas and information on good governance for Aboriginal organisations.

What we don’t do...

Sometimes an organisation's needs are greater than our ability to help. In such cases we will do our best to provide referrals and advice on how an organisation can access the help they need.

There are some areas where we are unable to assist:

  • Mediation and conflict resolution
  • Business development
  • Securing funding, preparing submissions
  • Duplication of services offered by the Office of the Registrar of Aboriginal Corporations (ORIC)

Good Aboriginal governance means being inclusive, getting consensus, keeping your community and people with you. It means women and men together equal. Making strong decisions. Then doing it! Being responsive and getting things done. Making each other accountable and making sure governments are held accountable.”
